Applying TSK to Work Environments

How do we best approach peak performance at work?

During work, being preoccupied with results fosters burnout and a materialistic viewpoint. So where do we focus when working? These questions can be explored by participating in the Generating Results community group in FaceBook.  Just log into FaceBook, then at the top of your window, search for Generating Results from the Inside Out, or just click on this link: Generate from inside

Here are some of the topics being explored:
  • What is the zone of peak performance? Does it depend on particular things or processes?
  • Are abundance and well-being natural aspects of the zone? How about peak productivity?
  • Can we somehow steadily 'add value to experience' to approach the zone? Are there ways to do this at different levels, and with varying granularity or effectiveness?
  • Is adding value, or improving involvement a reliable way to drive progress?
  • How are 'flow' and 'glow' related to the zone?
  • Could management's promotion of self-actualization at work reduce the need for employee motivation via lower-level needs?
  • What keeps us from zone experiences?
  • How is involvement or engagement related to productivity and well-being?
  • Are there different types of involvement? Can we usefully characterize different levels of experiencing?
  • Are there different levels of inner involvement in whatever's at hand? If so, what are they?
  • Is there a natural, unimposed meeting ground for personal goals and organizational objectives?
  • Could this common ground alleviate employee distrust of management?
  • Does it work to change the way we see the world to change the world we see?
  • Can we define our own performance values and improve those in order to drive progress?
  • Would some performance values work better than others?

The working principle of the Generating Results community group in FaceBook is this: the best way to drive all types of progress--both inner and outer--is to continually approach the 'zone' of peak performance while keeping our practical goals in the 'backs' of our mind. Contrary to common practice, the best way is not to be preoccupied with results, with the bottom line scoreboard. As Kenneth Blanchard wrote, when people do their best, "all of their attention is on what they’re doing . . . . The results just seem to flow from this focus of energy. . . . Lots of companies seem to watch only their scoreboard—the bottom line. In doing so, they take their eyes off the ball . . . . That gets them out of the zone and invites long-term disaster.” (Blanchard, p. 49)

"Our state of mind creates our state of results." (Hansen and Allen, One Minute Millionaire, p. 28)   Recognize that your experience is a kind of playing field where, in a sense, you are the only player. The object of this game of life is to approach peak performance by driving involvement, or engagement, as high as you can. See whether you can reach ever higher levels of performance and self-actualization by getting completely into whatever is at hand.

Research shows that involvement or engagement in what is at hand is directly proportional to the worker's well-being, productivity, and the quality of the products and services delivered. I = k * W * P * Q. You can drive balanced, overall personal and organizational progress by focusing on increasing personal engagement/involvement, not on the scorecard, productivity, or the bottom line. Eventually, by virtue of focusing on consistently improving performance values--such as 'flow', 'glow', and 'zero'--or energy, concentration, and awareness, e.g.--we should clear away obstructions and make it possible to 'quickly' realize our goals.

Whether our actual situation looks hopeless, economically unlikely, challenging, optimistic, wonderful, no matter what--we can almost always add value to our experience moment by moment, focusing on dissolving obstacles to productivity and generating a sense of natural fulfillment and completeness within our own experience. We should not wait for external circumstances to improve before regularly adding value to our 'experiential field'. Then it is much more likely that we will see our inner wealth reflected in external circumstances. As Dr. Wayne Dyer says, change the way you see the world and you will change the world you see.

To join this group just log into FaceBook, then at the top of your window, search for Generating Results from the Inside Out, or just click on this link: Generate from inside

We can share and support what's happening with each other on a 'live' basis, or in after-the-fact reports. Hopefully we will respect each other and refrain from ordinary conversation and trivia, which you typically find on Facebook. The emphasis here will be on 'seriously' sharing and reporting our own experience, and on clarifying but not 'answering' or 'solving' what's happening with others.

Build an engagement playing field!

The following article suggests that whatever we can do to dissolve our complexes, negative habits, and other experiential structures--will help deepen engagement, contribute to our improving performance and fulfillment, and approach the 'zone' of peak performance. By thus focusing on continually removing obstructions to complete personal involvement and engagement, we develop a natural, unimposed meeting ground for both personal fulfillment and organizational results, inspiring people toward peak performance, self-actualization,and optimal well-being--all at the same time.
